A group of people beat up two foreigners this afternoon on charges of mugging a man after he withdrew approximately Tk 2 lakh from a bank in Bashundhara Residential Area, said police.
The foreigners, reportedly from a Middle Eastern country, sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital, confirmed Sujan Haque, inspector (investigation) of Bhatara Police Station.
Locals suspected the foreigners of using Scopolamine, also known as “Devil’s breath”, to execute the mugging.
The incident took place around 1:45pm.
The inspector said they primarily came to know that a man saw the foreigners taking money from the victim as he exited the bank.
Suspecting that they had used Scopolamine—a substance known to impair a person’s ability to resist—he confronted them.
Upon being challenged, the foreigners hurriedly got into their car and attempted to speed away. The man screamed and drew the attention of locals, who chased down the vehicle.
The gathered crowd of people then vandalised the car, and beat up the two men. A video of the incident was circulated on social media today after the incident took place.
“We are investigating what actually happened,” added the police inspector.
